I wanted to share a video with you that I thought was both hysterical and troubling all at the same time. Funny because it pegged how churches in today’s culture plan and think about worship, but it’s troubling for the same reason. Here’s the link http://vimeo.com/11501569.
If I’m honest, I recognize that I have done, said or thought many of those same things in planning and leading worship. This video made me laugh at myself and yet it challenged me at the same time. I don’t ever want for worship to become a show, meticulously planned, with certain tricks meant to emotionally manipulate people. I also don’t ever want worship to be about the details of worship, rather than the object of our worship, the God of the universe! Our worship together is about each of us bringing the real us in front of a real God. It’s about saying ‘thank you’ to God for all He has done. It is about being transformed by that experience so we can go out and live differently in the world.
One of the things we value at The Watershed is “authentic worship that is rooted, relevant and real.” By this we mean that we want to provide an opportunity for each of us to take off our Christian masks and authentically connect with God. It means that we want to take the best of the past (rooted) and combine it with the best of today (relevant) in order to make sure we neither become a dead ritual or a church adrift on the waves of our cultural whims and fancies. Enjoy the clip and pray with me that we will not become a cliché. Pray with me that The Watershed becomes a people who are connecting daily with God through worship!
