Knowing God and knowing of God

Life Journal Day 2:

Scripture:  Job 42:5  "My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You.  Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

My Life Journal: entry 1

We gave Life Journals to everyone who came on Easter.  In order to encourage folks to accept the challenge of doing this journal every day for 40 days (until Pentecost), I decided to post some of my thoughts that come out of my Life journal.  Hope this is helpful.

Helping make our Mark

Many weeks, I will stand up and say that I want us to be a church that is known for its love, its compassion and its generosity.  I want for Christians and non-Christians to look at each of you as an incredible example of what it means to be in the process of “becoming more like Christ.”  Each time I say those words, I know they represent a goal that we are striving toward, not one we have fully achieved.

The Magnificent Seven

Studies show that people decide whether they are going to ever return to a church in the first seven minutes upon arriving.  Some of these people have not set foot in a church in years, if ever.  Many of them have been burned by bad experiences in other churches.  This might be their last time to give the people of God a chance.  Or maybe the last time they give God a chance.  That means, that every time God brings us a first-time guest, we need to take that very seriously

The Lent that's not in your bellybutton

Well, the traditional season of Lent began on Wednesday and Christians around the world will go through a season of preparation which might include "giving up" something for the next 40 days (excluding Sundays) leading up to Easter.

Prayerlessness

I want to be the first to confess that I never feel like I pray enough or in the right way. I have been constantly conditioned to think of prayer in a certain way. In my usual picture of prayer, I do a lot of speaking and God does a lot of listening. I tell God things that he already knows and ask for my life to be easy. I try to refine the words in my head before I “officially” present them to God (yeah, right). I’m afraid to expect to much but feel guilty when I don’t expect enough.
